Popular Smubs on Twitter: Social Media & its Discontents

Posted by Marie in People, Share Smubs, Twitter on May 27th, 2009 | No Comments »

So far today, two very different stories have really been making the smub rounds on Twitter.

First up is the the news that the New York Times has appointed its first Social Media Editor, Jennifer Preston.

According to @marshallk’s Read Write Web (whose tweet first brought the story to our attention), although Preston is a journalist, author and adjunct professor at Columbia, her online footprint is, as yet, rather small — with very little indeed known about her personal use of social media. So, what exactly does a Social Media Editor do? Read more at http://smub.it/gf9!

The second story revolves around Twitter’s most-followed celebrity, Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk).

Following the news that Twitter has entered into a “lightweight, non-exclusive” reality TV development deal, Kutcher tweeted his discontent: “Wow I hope this isn’t true. I really don’t like being sold out. May have to take a twitter hiatus.” CNN has the story at http://smub.it/gi1. @TheExpert’s (who first tweeted the smub) reaction? “OMG! The horror! Ashton Kutcher threatens to leave Twitter [...] How will we survive w/out his pithy commentary?”

Smub iPhone Improvement

Posted by janet in Mobile Smubs, Share Smubs, iPhone on May 18th, 2009 | No Comments »

It might seem like a teeny little thing, but we’ve just made it possible to type either “smub.it/” or “smub.com” to the left of the http:// of any URL on your iPhone in order to save or share a link. That allows you to take advantage of the iPhone’s .com text string when you’re typing in a browser window.

More improvements are coming! Spread the word. Share a Smub!

New URL Structure for Smub

In an effort to help iPhone users post really really short links to Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, Digg, Reddit, and more, we’ve reconfigured our URL structure. Now, when you simply want to post a link, you’ll get a randomly generated Smub, like this:

Smub's URLs are Shorter

Smub

These shorter URLs are meant to help with Twitter posts, especially. If you choose to bookmark, or save, a Smub, it’ll continue to pull a short string of characters to help you remember the bookmark.

Of course, if you want to name your URLs, simply sign up for a Smub account, and you can name every link you save or share!

We wanted to give you the flexibility of choice. Let us know what you think!
