It was an extremely eventful weekend at AAN for the Smub team! We met lots of wonderful people, many of whom are very excited about what Smub can do for their newsweeklies. We’ll have lots more to say about that in the coming weeks. In the meantime, here are more images from AAN 09:

This week, the American arm of the Smub team (consisting of @hotweir, @toddsf, @tlamouline and I) are in super hot Tucson, Arizona for the 32nd annual Association of Alternative Newsweeklies Conference!

The AAN Conference consists of three days of workshops, seminars, caucuses and, yes, other words that generally mean “Let’s all hang out and chat.” We’re extremely excited for the opportunity to meet with all the publishers in attendance and discuss what Smub can do for them.

The Smub team will be manning a booth as well as milling about the conference and our host hotel, the JW Marriott Star Pass Resort & Spa. Please do stop by and say hello!

Remember that Harvard study that was making the rounds recently? The Metro turned the study’s findings into a rather gutsy headline:

Ta-da!

We’ll be rolling through many tips you’ll hopefully find helpful when using Smub. If you got a tip or trick of your own for using Smub, please let us know! We’ll write a little post about it and kick it over to the tips bar!

Profile Info with Every Smubbed Tweet

Posted by Marie in Updates on June 17th, 2009 | No Comments »

We’ve added useful info to every smubbed tweet! If you’ve got smubs that point directly to tweets — for instance, as a means to Managing Your Favorite Tweets — from now on, viewing these smubs will not only provide you with the original tweet, but also provide you with the profile information of the person who wrote it.

To illustrate, I saved one of my personal favorite tweets (written by @cactus) at this smub: “http://smub.it./mariethebee/cactus.fav.” Now, when I view it, Smub gathers information from Twitter and displays it alongside the original tweet:

Now I don’t have to click over to Cactus’ profile page for more info; everything’s right there in front of me!

This is particularly useful when sharing smubbed tweets with your friends and family who aren’t familiar with Twitter. It gives them context as to the who, the what and possibly even the why of the tweet you’re sharing with them.

New Retweet Option

Posted by Marie in Updates on June 17th, 2009 | No Comments »

Since so many smubbers use Twitter, we’ve working on extra functions that address common Twitter behaviors. As of today, we now have a new option for Retweeting with Smub!

When smubbing an individual tweet, you’ll now be given the option to retweet it immediately. The retweet icon will appear right beside the bookmark icon at the top of the Smub interface:

retweet

Once you’ve clicked the retweet icon, Smub will automatically populate your tweet field with the standard “RT @name” syntax and the content of the tweet you’ve smubbed. Be sure to double check your character count, of course! The 140-count rule still applies, even if you’re tweeting from Smub.

Need help isolating individual tweets so you can smub them? Don’t worry, it’s easy! When viewing your tweet stream from Twitter.com, simply click the time stamp shown directly beneath the tweet you’d like to smub. This will open the tweet up in a new page. Since this new page has its own unique URL, you can smub it just as you would any other link! Be advised: if you’re viewing Twitter.com from your iPhone, in order to click on timestamps, you’ll need to be using the standard interface. This option is available when you login to Twitter on your phone!

Problem Solved: Cyrillic and Japanese Characters

Posted by Marie in Personalized Smubs, Updates on June 17th, 2009 | No Comments »

In previous releases of Smub, there was a bit of problem when using Cyrillic and Japanese characters when tweeting. Smub was displaying “????” rather than the correct characters. We are happy to announce that this issue has been fixed! If you’re having any additional difficulties, please let us know so that we can address them immediately!

Vanity URLs? Smub’s got those, too!

Posted by Marie in Personalized Smubs on June 14th, 2009 | No Comments »

Looks like Vanity URLs are all the rage this week! At 12:01 AM EDT on Saturday, June 13, Facebook began offering its users the option to customize the web addresses for their profiles with their own usernames, allowing Facebookers to stake claim to the names, nicknames and internet handles that have come to represent their online lives. These vanity URLs proved very popular — within just 15 minutes of opening, Facebook registered over 500,000 usernames!
